Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pondicherry.

The Pondicherry Veterinary College was formally inaugurated on 14 October 1994. The college was later on rechristened as Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (RAGACOVAS). The college is being monitored and administered by Pondicherry Veterinary College Society (PVCS). PVCS is managed by the Board of Governors of which the Chief Secretary to the Government of Pondicherry is the Chairman. The Governing Board consists of 12 members of which the Secretary (Animal Husbandry) is the Vice-Chairman and the Dean of the College is the Member-Secretary. A General Body having 13 members with Chief Secretary as Chairman is the ultimate authority. The College is fully financed by the Government of Pondicherry.

RAGACOVAS is located at Kurumbapet, Pondicherry which is about 7 KM from the main town. The campus comprises of three zones of which two zones are located at Kurumbapet and the third zone (Veterinary Teaching Hospital) is located at Mettupalayam. All the 18 academic departments as per the mandatory stipulations of the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) have been established. The total faculty strength of 59 are from 10 states and one union territory.

The VCI has recognized the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme offered by this College with effect from November 25, 1999, the day on which the first batch of students passed out and the degree of this college is included in the first schedule of IVC Act.

This year (2005) postgraduate programme have been established in five disciplines viz. Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension.

The College campus is situated in three places (Campus A, B and C).

Campus A is the main College campus in which the following are located.

  1. The Administrative building (Dean's Chamber, Office of PA to Dean, Academic section, Administrative section and the Computer centre).
  2. 14 Departments (Departments of Animal Nutrition, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Avian Production and Management, Livestock Production and Management, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary Public Health).
  3. Library.
  4. Instructional Farm Complex (Department of Livestock Production & Management).
  5. Canteen.
  6. Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
  7. Herbal Garden.
  8. Fish cum Aviary Pond.
  9. Emu Farm.

Campus B, located 1/2 km away from Campus A contains the Gymnasium Hall (housing the Department of Physical Education), staff residential buildings, men's hostel, women's hostel and guest house.

Campus C, located 2 kms away from Campus A in a place called Mettupalayam houses the Teaching Veterinary Hospital. The Departments of Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Animal Reproduction Obstetrics & Gynecology, Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, Veterinary Epidemiology & Preventive medicine and the wards are located in the Teaching Veterinary Hospital.
