Union Public Service Commission is a constitutional body for conducting Civil Services Examination (CSE). CSE is meant for recruitment to the services and posts like Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Services (IPS). It also includes Group A services like Central Excise and Customs, Civil accounts, Postal services, Railways services.

The advertisement for CSE usually appears in Employment News in the month of Nov-Dec. CSE will consist to two successive stages

(1) CSE (Preliminary) – Objective type, for selection of candidates for the main Examination.
Preliminary Examination of the CSE will be held by UPSC on middle of May every year.

(2) CSE (Main) – written and Interview for the selection of candidates for the various service and posts noted above
The main examination is likely to be held in October/November, 2004.

Major Eligibility conditions:
Apart from Nationality a candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years. The upper age limit will be relaxable up to 5 years (for scheduled caste/Tribe) or 3 years (for other Backward classes).

Number of attempts
Every candidate shall be permitted 4 attempts at the examination. This is relaxable for SC/ST (will not apply) and OBC (7 attempts).

An attempt at a preliminary examination shall be deemed to be an attempt at the examination mere applying for CSE (prelims) will not be considered as an attempt.

Scheme and subjects for the preliminary and main examination

A. Preliminary examination
The examination will consist of two papers with following marks duration:

Paper I Gen. Studies 150 marks 3 hours
Paper II One optional subject 300 marks 3 hours

Total : 450 marks

Optional subjects the candidate can choose any one of the 23 subjects listed by UPSC.

B. Main Examination
The written examination will consist of the following papers:

Paper I One Indian Language 300 marks
Paper II English 300 marks
Paper III Essay 200 marks
Paper IV & V General Studies 300 marks for each paper
Paper VI, VII, VIII & IX Two optional subjects 300 marks for each paper
Interview 300 marks

Total : 2900 marks
